Miley Cyrus has delivered a chilling tribute to the victims of the Las Vegas concert massacre. She performed her song ‘The Climb’ for the first time in six years.
The ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer launched her week-long residency on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon a day after the mass shooting, which claimed the lives of 59 people and injured over 500 more.
Heartfelt tribute to the victims
Kicking off her week-long stint at ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’, Miley Cyrus lent her big talents to a worthy cause, honoring the victims of Sunday’s tragic Las Vegas shooting with an emotional tribute to Dido’s ‘No Freedom’ during Monday’s episode.
Cyrus opted not to promote one of her new tracks from an upcoming album, but rather her 2009 hit about overcoming adversity.
“This morning, we woke up to the news of another senseless shooting. This time in Las Vegas. In the face of tragedies and acts of terror, we need to remember that good still exists in this world,” host Jimmy Fallon shared when the show began.
“We’re here to entertain you tonight, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
During a set by country star Jason Aldean at the outdoor Route 91 Harvest Festival, the gunman, who police identified as Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire on the crowd from a hotel before reportedly killing himself.
Footage from the scene shows Aldean fleeing the stage amid the sound of prolonged, rapid gunfire. Las Vegas police said 22,000 people were in attendance; the large crowd ducked for cover, then fled in a scramble at the sound of the shots.
Miley And Adam Sandler beautiful cover
Before the inaugural episode of ‘Miley Week,’ the country girl took to Instagram to spread some love with her message to the 59 people who were killed, the more than 400 injured and their families.
“Jimmy Fallon and I dedicated this show to not only mourning this horrific event but using this platform to encourage unity, peace, and hopefulness,” she wrote on Instagram.
“So we started this week off with a song I haven’t performed in years – ‘The Climb’. These words mean more now to me than ever. Keep the faith… sending love to all.”
She also performed Dido’s ‘No Freedom’ on the show, with help from ‘The Ridiculous 6’ and ‘Jack and Jill’s star Adam Sandler.
The soulful soul, whose latest album, ‘Younger Now’, was released on Sept. 29, will continue her week residency on NBC throughout the week.
Jimmy Kimmel on the shooting
American television personality Jimmy Kimmel has fought through tears to address the Las Vegas mass shooting that claimed 59 lives on Sunday night.
On Monday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host broke down, when he began his late-night show by talking about what happened in his hometown the night before.
“We wonder why, even though there’s probably no way to ever know, why a human being would do something like this to other human beings.”
“This morning we have children without parents and fathers without sons, mothers without daughters… we lost two police officers, we lost a nurse, a special education teacher.
“It’s the kind of thing that makes you want to throw up or give up. There are families who are going to have to live with this pain forever because one person with a violent and insane voice in his head managed to stockpile a high-powered collection of rifles.”
“I’ve been reading a lot of comments from people saying there was nothing we could do about it, but I disagree with that intensely. Of course, there’s something we can do about it, there are a lot of things we can do about it.
“But we don’t, which is interesting because when someone with a beard attacks us, we tap phones, we invoke travel bans, we build walls, we take every possible precaution to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
“When an American buys a gun and kills Americans, then there’s nothing we can do about it.
“Maybe I’m nuts, but I think we could all put politics aside and agree that no American needs an M16 [rifle]… or 10 of them.”
Taking on ‘Bodak Yellow’
Cardi B’s ubiquitous hit ‘Bodak Yellow’ just celebrated its second week atop the Hot 100, and it’s continuing to take over the culture in wildly unexpected ways. In the latest such example, Miley Cyrus covered the song during an appearance on The Tonight Show on Monday night
Cyrus and host Jimmy Fallon faced off in a “musical genre challenge,” in which each of them was tasked with reinterpreting a well-known song in a completely different style.
Fallon, for one, performed a soft rock version of ‘Cotton-Eyed Joe’ and then sang Sublime’s ‘Santeria’ with a Latin flare.
Cyrus then transformed R. Kelly’s ‘Ignition (Remix)’ into a bluegrass jam. And re-worked ‘Bodak Yellow’ into a dramatic pop anthem. She absolutely nailed it, rising to her feet and giving the hip-hop hit a show-stopping pop makeover.
