Further look at Blade Runner 2049
This weekend makes the 35th anniversary of Blade Runner. To mark the occasion Warner Bros. graced fans with not one, but five behind the scenes featurettes.
Blade Runner 2049 is one of the most anticipated films of 2017, and trailers have totally delivered a magnificent look into the film. But now, we’ve got making-of featurettes giving a further look at some of the stunning cinematography and killing visual effects.
The clips shed some light on the world of 2049 Los Angeles, as well as how Blade Runner 2049 is trying to set itself apart from the original, through interviews with the crew and cast.
Cinematography, the clips show a lot more glory shots of Los Angeles in 2049. Also, little things we saw briefly in the teasers, such as the beautiful holographs and a snippet or two of Ryan Gosling in action.
There are also interviews with director Denis Villeneuve, visual effects supervisor John Nelson, director of photography Roger Deakins. As well as cast members Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and Jared Leto.
Ridley Scott, director of the original Blade Runner, serves as executive producer for the sequel. He sees the film as a chance to extend the world. “There is always more story to tell,” he said. “It’s good to be home,” he added.
Taking on the challenge
In 1982, Ridley Scott‘s Blade Runner brought Philip K. Dick‘s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” to the masses thanks to an iconic and often imitated big-screen adaptation.
35 years later in our world–and 30 years later in the futuristic world of the movie–Oscar-nominee Denis Villeneuve tackles the sequel that many fans wanted but some thought it would ever come to pass.
In a recent interview, Villeneuve said he realizes the deck is stacked against anyone who tries to take up the torch from Scott and tell a new story in this iconic sci-fi universe.
“No matter what you do, no matter how good what you’re doing is, the film will always be compared to the first. Which is a masterpiece. So I made peace with that. And when you make peace with that, you are free…” he said.
So he and new star Ryan Gosling “made peace” with the fact that some people may not like whatever they do with 2049, and it will always be judged against the original. Then went ahead and made the movie they wanted to make.
” And I must say he was not there physically, but I felt his presence all the time because I was dealing with his universe all the time. So in a way, he wasn’t there, but he was there a lot at the same time,” he added.
Blade Runner 2049
The story is set thirty years after the events of the first film. A new blade runner, LAPD Officer K, Ryan Gosling, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos.
K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard, Harrison Ford, a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years
The movie was filmed in Hungary last year, where Villeneuve was able to work his magic.
Of course, the acclaimed director did it along with production designer Dennis Gassner, art director Paul Ingler, and legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins. Who were able to create complex and true landscapes in which his actors could work.
It’s set to release just in a few months
Blade Runner 2049 is set for release on October 6th and sees Harrison Ford reprising the role of Rick Deckard alongside Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista, Jared Leto and Edward James Olmos.
“I think it’s kind of fun to play a character 30 years later.” says Ford who knows of which he speaks, considering he did it fairly recently for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and has another Indiana Jones film on the horizon.
“The story, the themes, the stunning visual environments. It was a pleasure to get back in the world of Blade Runner again,” he finished.
Filmed in Hungary last year, Villeneuve — along with production designer Dennis Gassner, art director Paul Ingler, and legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins — was able to create elaborate and true landscapes in which his actors could work.
Of the 13-time Oscar nominee Deakins, Gosling adds, “Roger is a master storyteller. You realize once you are in one of his shots, half your work has already been done.”
“We are running towards the finishing line right now,” director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival) told EW recently. “We are elated. It feels like Christmas as we look at the completed shots.”
