On Monday, John Legend showed us all he really is the husband of the year. The actor offered the most lovely and perfect response to his wife’s postpartum depression essay.
Chrissy Teigen published earlier this month a powerful essay where she talks about struggling with postpartum depression. In an interview with People magazine on Monday, John celebrated her and her courage.
They’re the cutest!
Opening up about the struggle…
We all love Chrissy Teigen and her sense of humor and beautiful personality. Earlier this month the supermodel showed us another skin when she penned an essay in Glamour magazine.
In the essay, Chrissy opened up about her battle with postpartum depression since having her baby Luna last April. The brutally honest essay exposed Chrissy’s struggle with depression and anxiety, to the point she couldn’t leave the house.
She said, “Most days were spent in the exact same spot on the couch and rarely would I muster up the energy to make it upstairs for bed. John would sleep on the couch with me, sometimes four nights in a row. I started keeping robes and comfy clothes in the pantry so I wouldn’t have to go upstairs. There was a lot of spontaneous crying.”
Helping and empowering others.
Chrissy explained that she made the essay not only because it was therapeutical for her opening up about it, but also to decrease the stigma around depression and helping others.
“I’m speaking up now because I want people to know it can happen to anybody and I don’t want people who have it to feel embarrassed or to feel alone. I also don’t want to pretend like I know everything about postpartum depression because it can be different for everybody. But one thing I do know is that – for me – just merely being open about it helps,” she said.
Perfect response.
While this is totally Chrissy’s story to tell, John had the perfect response when he was asked about in an interview with People.
Even when he couldn’t relate to what she was going through John has pretty clear what he had to do, “For me as a husband, it was my job to do the best I could to support her and understand what she was going through and do whatever I could do to help her. I feel like that’s the least I could do.”
“As a man, you don’t know internally what it feels like. You should read about it and understand what it is and really just be there to help. You need to be present and you need to be compassionate. And we’re all learning and trying to figure it out as we go.”
Celebrating his wife.
John was really proud of his wife’s bravery to share the tough experience with the public and aiming to help others. He said, “I think it was powerful for her to let a lot of women know they’re not alone, and no matter how much money you have or fame, anybody can feel that. And it’s hard for anybody no matter how successful you are and how many resources you have.”
