But it’s not only about a long song. Grohl explains that Play tries to show how difficult, challenging and rewarding learning and mastering an instrument can be.
Here’s Grohl’s statement:
Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening… and when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out. And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.
So, he decided to challenge himself once more. As we said before, Dave Grohl composed a 23-minute song to be played on 7 different instruments. He also directed it, with the collaboration of Mark Monroe and the cinematography of Brandon Trost (The Disaster Artist, This Is The End).
How it will go
The first part consists of behind the scenes footage, in which Grohl expresses his love for music, the challenges of this project, the logistics, the preparation for the performance, and the details about the recording. Then comes what we’re waiting to see. How he put everything together. Starting with the drums, Grohl lays down the recording in one take, which means that if he made a mistake, he’d have to take it from the top and re-record it.
Watch the teaser here:
For what we can see, this is going to be a band with seven people. Well, seven Daves. Each one of them playing an instrument.
Play will be released on streaming platforms on August 10. And a limited edition vinyl (which you can now preorder) will be available on September 28. But that’s not all. Play will also have an online interactive version, in which the users will be able to focus on one instrument at a time, as well as downloading the sheet music.
Just a few more days before we can be a part of this incredible experience!
