Opening up about dark and painful moments

On a new episode of Viceland’s The Therapist, host Dr. Siri Sat Sam Singh sat down with Corey Taylor to talk about the Slipknot singer’s childhood.

Corey didn’t shy away from deeply personal topics in the episode. The episode ended up with a shocking and frustrating revelation when Taylor opens up to Singh about growing up in a household filled with neglect and abuse.

“I was raped by someone in the neighborhood,” Taylor says. The frontman said the incident of abuse occurred after his frequent family moves resulted in a difficulty with finding childhood friends.

Taylor explained that there was only a person to really hand out with, a 16-year-old kid. The teen used to invite him to his house and play music and that one day it became someone else,

“I didn’t tell anybody for a long time because he threatened to hurt me, threatened to hurt my mom,” he said.

It was the first time he opened about the terrible incident.

Ups and downs for Corey Taylor

Later on, Taylor reflected on how the traumas of his past led to a suicide attempt. “I took a bunch of pills at my grandmother’s house and just basically laid on the floor,” the singer said.

He recalled being found by his ex-girlfriend’s mom who had just stopped at his grandmother’s house to check on him. He said,  “I felt so empty that I had a hard time feeling anything other than grave depression. It was the one time I really was just like I can’t handle this.”

He also recalled candidly his grandmother’s face when she picked him up at the hospital. He highlighted his grandmother’s been the one person in his life and how disappointed she was.

Taylor credits fatherhood with helping him recover from his past trauma, he indicated his gratitude in being able to provide a better life for his own children.

“You know, the only thing I ever wanted was to be a dad. … I have three amazing kids. I never want my kids to go through what I went through,” he said.

“The darkness is someplace I visit,” he said. “I don’t live there.”
