The 2017 Grammy Awards gave the world a lot to talk about, from really weird fashion choices to musical performances that left everyone breathless. But let’s take a second to remember what the grammy’s are actually about. The whole point of this show is to celebrate good music and art.
In case you missed the show, we leave you here the winners of the big night.
9. The big winner of the night (Album of the Year)
Adele was the star that shined through the night. Facing artists such as Beyoncé, Bieber, Drake and Simpson. She managed to succeed, despite her rocky start from her George Michael performance, the singer took home a total of five Grammys during the show, including:Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Pop Solo Performance. And of course, Song, Record, and Album of the year. But the best thing wasn’t what she won, but what she said.
Adele won album of the year, after a long run against Beyonce’s visual album Lemonade. There had been a lot of talk about who will take home the price, would it be Adele’s 25 album? or would it finally be Beyoncé, after all, the racist drama surrounding the Award show?
While receiving her award, Adele broke into tears as she thanked Beyoncé for the amazing job that she did, on representing black culture. The two artists shared a beautiful moment, that was later on celebrated, with Adele breaking her grammy in half ( Mean Girls style) and sharing it with Beyoncé.
8. The young revelation (Best New Artist)
Chance the Rapper was named Best New Artist, after fighting with awesome nominees such as Kelsea Ballerini, The Chainsmokers, Maren Morris, and Anderson Paak. This Chicago young rapper, broke out in a major way this past year thanks to his latest mixtape called Coloring Book.
The tape debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 chart. It also made history by being the first project to ever land on the charts thanks because of streaming only; With 57.3 millions streams on its first week Chance managed to win Best Rap Album. But he had some strong competition such as The Anonymous Nobody by De La Soul, Major Key by DJ Khaled, Views by Drake, Blank Face LP by Schoolboy Q and The Life of Pablo by Kanye West who didn’t attend the show.
7. This one made Obama Sing (Best Rap Song)
Do you remember when Hotline Bling accompanied the Obama’s Viral video and made him dance along Usher an Janelle Monae? Thanks to Drake’s writters Aubrey Graham & Paul Jefferies, the whole world was singing and dancing with the winner of the night,“Hotline Bling.”
Even though Drake was not able to receive the price, the song made it to the top but no without fighting a hard battle with songs such as No Problem, All The Way Up, Famous, Ultralight Beam, and Donnie Trumpet.
6. They didn’t seemed stressed out about being in the stage in their underwear (Best Pop Duo/Group Performance)
This category was very fought, since everyone’s favortie was here. I’m talking about Closer by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey, 7 Years by Lukas Graham, Work by Rihanna featuring Drake and last but not least Cheap Thrills by Sia featuring Sean Paul.
Twenty One Pilots won this award with “Stressed Out,” the song’s ability to connect with a range of listeners by tapping into the universal theme of longing for the lost days, was what made it extremely popular.
5. Twist it a little bit and it would become successful (Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album)
The album Summertime won the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album awar, facing competition such as Cinema by Andrea Bocelli, Fallen Angels by Bob Dylan and Stages Live by Josh Groban. What made Willie Nelson’s album so special, was the inclusion of duo’s traditional pop standards with a little twist that made it feel different, being more intimate but also more straightforward.
4. These country guys made it to the top (Best Country Song and Album)
Tim McGraw won this award with Humble and Kind, Tim’s greatest success in years, which was about to go unnoticed when McGraw presented a video of the song on Facebook. The others nominated songs were Blue Ain’t Your Color, Die a Happy Man, My Church, and Vice.
On the Albums category were Big Day In A Small Town by Brandy Clark, Full Circle by Loretta Lynn, Hero by Maren Morris and Ripcord by Keith Urban but the happy winner was A Sailor’s Guide to Earth by Sturgill Simpson. The fun fact of this album, is that it represents a letter to his newborn son, telling him how to become a man and apparently how to win an award.
3. The song and album that Rocked the night (Best Rock Song and Album)
The rock battle was disputed by Burn the Witch, Hardwired, Heathens, My Name Is Human and Backstar, by David Bowie, who unfortunately passed away last year, Toni Visconti explained that this was a gift to Bowie’s fans and that “his death was no different from his life, a work of art.”
Also, for Best Rock Album were nominated California by Blink-182, Magma by Gojira, Death of a Bachelor by Panic! at the Disco, Weezer by Weezer and the one which won the award, Tell Me I’m Pretty by Cage the Elephant. This album lead them to a successful tour which was due to its quality and to tracks like “Mess Around.”
2. The sexiest slow jam (Best R&B Song)
Lake by the Ocean by Hod David & Musze won the award. It was qualified as the sexiest slow jam, a comeback song for Maxwell who wanted to get just right. The others nominated song were Come See Me, Exchange, Kiss It Better, and Luv.
1. Queen B proved that she’s still ruling the world (Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Video)
Beyonce’s album developed an intense worldwide discussion about race, feminism, social media and the music industry. Lemonade won the category but that was not all for the singer who also won with “Formation,” a song that made an announcement that let us know that despite the singer’s relative silence for the past few years she has been listening.
