WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram Fully Restored After Suffering Global Outage

Major Facebook services such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger are fully back online after suffering a global outage on Friday. DownDetector reported that the services went down for approximately one hour on Friday but were later restored by the Facebook team without explaining the reasons for the outage.

“Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have trouble accessing some Facebook services,” a Facebook spokesperson stated. “We resolved this issue for everyone, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Many people who attempted to send Messenger or WhatsApp messages experienced delivery errors while the outage persisted, and the Instagram app showed “Couldn’t Refresh Feed” on mobile devices and even a “5xx Server Error” message on the desktop. The downtime occurred around 10 a.m. PT or 1:30 ET on Friday, DownDetector disclosed.

Before the general outage was experienced with Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, the Facebook Gaming account had earlier reported on Friday that several technical issues were being witnessed with gaming and major Facebook services, CNBC wrote.

“There are a number of issues currently affecting Facebook products, including gaming streams,” the Facebook Gaming account had tweeted. “Multiple teams are working on it, and we’ll update you when we can.”

Thousands of users also reported the outrage on Reddit and Twitter and other social media immediately it occurred. This is not the first time Facebook services had been offline for a significant amount of time, but the tech company had usually been quick at restoring affected services.
