Viacom just announced that the series will have 26 episodes, while the film will come as a live-action with a hint of CGI. Although there will be new characters, Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Angelica, and Susie will be on even more adventures.

Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain, Rugrats‘ creators, will be executive producers now. The series production is in progress. More news about casting and dates will be announced later this year. The movie’s release date for now is November 13, 2020, and even though we don’t know yet what’s the plot, we know it is happening and we’re very excited.

For the very young ones

Rugrats was Nickelodeon’s second Nicktoon. Premiered in 1991, the show had a 13-year run until 2004, with 9 seasons, three movies, one spin-off, and multiple video games. Rugrats‘ plot is actually very simple: basically, toddler’s adventures. But the fun isn’t just in the adventures, but in their families’ stories and lifestyles, and the gags.

For example, Tommy is a one-year-old baby with a very active imagination. His parents are Didi and Stu Pickles, a very caring teacher and a toy inventor, whose toys tend to break. Chuckie is Tommy’s best friend, son of a widower. The twins Phil and Lil enjoy eating worms, their mom is a feminist. Angelica is Tommy’s cousin, the spoiled daughter of a workaholic mom and a very loving and devoted dad.

Each family’s story is very real and down to Earth, they can make you laugh and ugly cry. But the funniest thing about this show is the more basic one. Even though these babies talk (a grammatically incorrect English, of course), adults can’t understand them. So if we watched this from the adults’ point of view, it’d all be baby talk and babbling kids, and that’s hilarious.

Add this last fact to the kids’ imagination and you have a successful series as a result, filled with funny adventures. Remember that episode in which Chuckie accidentally swallowed watermelon seeds? Or the one where Tommy and Chuckie imagine what it’d be like being adults?
