Some people do exercise, others dance, sing or play an instrument when they’re feeling a little off. But for me, the perfect solution is a good movie. If I’m feeling a bit masochist I’ll put on 500 days of Summer or any other cheesy romantic film, that will make me channel all of those emotions. Or maybe I’ll just choose a good comedy, that will boost up my mood.
If you’re not having the best day or you just feel like watching a movie to have a good time, then take a look at this pop-filled list of movies. Enjoy.
12. White Chicks. For real. (2004)
Hold my poodle, clichés are clichés for a reason, and honestly, White Chicks is the perfect movie if you’re looking for a mood buster. I mean, how can you feel bad or sad when you’re watching a gigantic, buffed man singing acapella to Vanessa Carlton’s A Thousand Miles? That’s right you can’t.
I think I know almost every line of this movie, I Promise you will feel 100 times better after watching it. Even if it’s like, the 28th time you see it.
11. Submarine (2010)
The mood of this film is quite different from pop-culture-filled White Chicks, but it get’s the job done. This Indie movie will make your intense-self be filled with both emotion and nostalgia. Directed by Richard Ayoade, Submarine tells the story of a romantic and nostalgic 12-year-old who struggles with love.
From the color palette to the dialogues and the insane views, this film will get you out of your blue zone while giving you a lot to think about.
10. Rent (2005)
What’s better than music? Music and movies of course, even though I’m not a musical expert, I know Rent is one of the greatest out there. The broadway show is 100 times better of course, but the film sums it all up pretty good.
Following the lives of these troubled and poor group of friends, you will be up in your couch singing to ‘Tango Maureen’ or crying your eyes out with ‘Seasons of Love.’ Plus, you’ll get to see Idina Menzel being incredibly hot in her bisexual triangle.
9. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)
This movie OMG, this movie will make you cry like a little baby but it will all be worth it.
Based on Frannie Flag’s novel, the film directed by Jon Avnet takes you on three different times of the character’s lives. You get to see them grow and face their problems in the most heroic ways. I Can’t reveal much more because I would ruin the movie for you. But it’s all about women empowerment, love, and sacrifice. MUST WATCH FILM.
8. Lost In Translation (2003).
I Think this is one of those perfect films to watch when you’re feeling blue. It won’t cheer you up, but it will make you fall in love with the nostalgic conversations and scenes that Bill Murray and Scarlet Johanson share on the screen.
Directed by the one and only, Sofia Coppola, the movie follows two characters staying in a hotel up in Tokyo. The film is not about what actually happens on the screen, but about the conversations and that certain magic that you feel when someone understands your pains. Rumor has it, this movie was Copolla’s response to her divorce with Spike Jonze (who later on answered with Her).
If you’re feeling nostalgic or philosophical with life, do yourself a favor and watch Lost in Translation. If you already saw it, it get’s better with time.
7. The Hours (2002).
With a similar mood to ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’, The Hours is based on Virginia Wolve’s troubled life and its told through the stories of three different woman. Starring amazing actresses such as Juliane Moore, Meryl Streep, and Nicole Kidman. This film is filled with feminist power, sexual liberation as it submerges you inside of its amazing scenes, making you fall in love with Wolve’s story and director’s Stephen Daldry’s views.
6. Mean Girls (2004)
Of course, I had to put Mean Girls on the list, Who hasn’t watched this film? (If you haven’t watched it you are so not fetch). This film is a comedy-relief for anyone who is looking for a good-old-pop-culture-filled movie. Written by Tina Fey, Mean Girls marked the life of a whole generation that fell in love with Aron Samuels and hated Regina George. I dare to say, Mean Girls has turned into a cult film, I mean anyone with a 5th sense like Karen Smith, knows at least one line from the film.
Plus, it has a perfectly healthy and hot-looking Lindsay Lohan on it. Just shut up and watch the movie.
5.Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Now, this is a good mood-lifter movie.
If you feel like your day has sucked, just wait until you see what the life of poor Olive is like. With a drug-addict grandpa, a success-driven dad, a suicidal uncle and a mute brother. This girl still gets to see the best in life, while dancing hilariously to ‘MC Hammer’s Can’t touch this’.
Directors Dayton and Faris ( a husband and wife couple) managed to make this amazing film, written by first-timer Michael Arndt. With an indie feel, you get to fall in love with this dysfunctional family and its adventures. Plus you will cry almost as much, as when Marley dies in that Jennifer Anniston movie.
4. 500 Days Of Summer (2009)
Ok, where do I begin? I’ve watched this movie at least, 20 times in the last year ( depressing huh?) This is the perfect film to watch when you are going through a breakup or you just got dumped by that weird, yet hot looking guy. It’s the dystopian view of love, mixed with indie scenes and an incredible script.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zoey Deschanel (She loves the Smiths) make the perfect (un-perfect) couple, you will laugh, cry and get sort-of turned on with them. But the main thing you will do is cry while you eat that Ben & Jerry’s cookie dough ice cream. It’s perfectly therapeutical.
3. Juno (2007)
Written by Diablo Cody, this film will make you understand that life is beautiful despite its batches, it will also make you want to drink Orange Juice out of the package so badly.
The film follows the life of recently pregnant Juno (Ellen Page) and her sexual partner Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). This couple of teenagers will have to grow up pretty quickly while keeping their relationship alive. The script, the scenes, the beautiful edition, this movie is worth it.
2.Amelié (2001)
European cinema either makes you love life or hate the living hell out of it. In Amelié’s case, you will walk out of your house dancing, singing and sticking your fingers in the nuts out on the farmer’s market. This film is so beautifully created. It’s color palette and the curious yet, awesome way that Jean-Pierre-Jeunet manages to direct Audrey Tautou’s talent will leave you breathless.
You will not only boost your mood, but you will be craving French lessons so badly.
1. American Beauty (1999)
It took me a long time to watch this movie (I have no idea why), but when I did, I loved every second of it. It also made me feel so warm and fuzzy inside, despite it’s ending. American Beauty it’s a perfect (slightly exaggerated) version of what is like to live in an American suburb. But it’s also a great representation of what life in general is.
Kevin Spacey makes the whole film 1000 times better, plus Thora Birch’s and Mena Suvari’s appearance will bring back all of those 90’s nostalgia. Remember, “it’s hard to stay mad when there’s so much beauty in the world.”
