Oldest Oscar Award Winner and The Sound of Music Actor, Christopher Plummer, is Dead

Christopher Plummer, the famed actor who is most remembered for his role in The Sound of Music, has died at the age of 91. Plummer died on Friday in his Connecticut home, according to his manager, Deadline reports.

Lou Pitt, a representative, and friend to the deceased said Plummer was an extraordinary man who was loved by all and sundry. He noted that the actor loved his profession thoroughly and approached life in a self-effacing manner. Pitt said Plummer was proud of his Canadian origin and was sought to affect the world positively through his art. He described the Oscar awarding-winning actor as a treasure to the nation, who would be greatly missed and his works leaving an imprint in the sands of time.

Plummer first attracted worldwide recognition when he starred as Captain Von Trapp in the 1965 musical, alongside Julie Andrew. This musical garnered a whopping five Academy Awards. The soundtracks from the movie also spent some weeks as No 1 in the US countdown and several more in the top 10 spots. His role in the 2010 movie, Beginners, won him Academy Award. In 2018, he was nominated again for his brilliant performance in All the Money in the World.

Plummer was a late bloomer, working in top-notch movies well into his eighties. He was part of the 2019 critically acclaimed movie, Knives Out, and starred in other films such as The Insider, and took voice-over duties in the animation Up. His outstanding performance in Knives Out made him the oldest person to win an Oscar. He also has an Emmy Award and two Tonys to his name for Cyrano and Barrymore, CNN writes.

He would star alongside a colleague from his generation, the late Sean Connery, in The Man Who Would Be King and Sherlock Holmes in Murder by Decree.

A Canadian by birth, he was quite accomplished in the theater and radio, taking part in hugely-successful plays that would earn him numerous awards. Included in his long trail of recognition is an Emmy for his role in the 1976 series, The Moneychangers.

Plummer started out on stage in the fifties. He partook in many productions before he will find commercial success in The Sound of Music. Plummer’s career spanned more than 70 years, between which he took part in over 200 movies and TV shows.

His first two strings of marriages were unsuccessful. However, in 1970 he married fellow actor Elaine Taylor, and they’ve been together ever since. He is survived by a daughter from his first marriage.
