Fashion trends are pretty much like that boyfriend from high school who never got over you, they come, they go and they come back (yes, eventually they’ll come crawling back to you) 2016 was the year we said hello again to the grungy look. As your ex-boyfriend, trends come back for a short period of time or they stay and make you go crazy.
This year I wanna talk about that manly style that for me, sums up this year. Those trends that are staying for 2017 and the other ones that you’ll stop replying its texts, in other words, the ones that will end this year.
Here’s a list of the 2016 trends that need to be discussed and those people who rocked them:
10. Bright, neon orange.
If 2015 was all about pink, orange replaced it this year. Many starts owned the color in the runway, The Biebs and Rihanna filled their tour merchandise with it. You can also find The North Face collabs, but the one that made orange go viral was NBA superstar Russell Westbrook. You know this was going to be a trend since he is considered as “one of the most stylish players in the NBA”. Will the trend stay? Probably not, since the fashion industry takes too many spins, the color won’t maintain for 2017.
9. The Adidas takeover.
The sportswear brand re-realised that their old model shoes like the Stan Smith, The Superstar and the Gazelle were a great hit. Things took an 180 degrees spin when the company released the NMD, a shoe with a rare silhouette that started as exclusive and then appeared in every single retail store. David Beckham was one of the countless stars that got their pair. Adidas is on the top of the industry right now, they are taking Nike’s position for once, since their shoes are affordable and everyone on Instagram owns at least a pair, but things might change next year, depending on Nike’s new releases.
8. “Post-Soviet Look”
The term was invented by the press, involving the work of Demna Gvasalia and Gosha Rubchinskiy from Georgia and Moscow respectively. The two designers are now part of the biggest names in fashion. Their styles mix Western subcultures with Soviet-era features to create some sort of ugly chic look. They use rare fabrics such as spandex and strange silhouettes that many wouldn’t call good taste. A$AP is one of the celebrities that love this designer’s trend. Now, I don’t see the trend staying, but the people behind it, definitely do.
7. Vintage Rock Band T-Shirts.
Now, when I was making the analogy of the boyfriend I was referring to this trend. These t-shirts are that bad guy you used to fall for, the lead singer of a garage band, the one that was always talking about music, gigs, booze, tattoos and that guy your parents hated. You know he’s no good, but you love him, you can’t help but dreaming of running away with him. These shirts are back in town, you know they have no future but you are taking the best of them. Kendall Jenner rocked this look all the way this year. Now, this trend took the departure train because it has become too mainstream but it will come back one day, sooner than you expect.
6. The Half and Half t-shirts.
The idea of these shirts comes straightforward you just need to cut two or more shirts in half and stitch one side of each one together. Although the trend started in 2011, it rises this year.Everyone had one, from Adidas mixed with Nike until a mash-up of bands combined in one shirt. Even Drake made one for his merchandise. It may seem like we have million of things to mix, but we actually don’t and this trend should stop very soon.
5. The furry fuss.
This is one trend I’m definitely into. Since I was a child I love extravaganza, everything that has a texture or it’s sparkly and naturally, the fur is making me lose it. Last year it was all about Kanye and blah blah blah, washed out clothes and stuff, but this year, things went the other road, much more heavy fabrics. Rihanna even launched a collab with Puma that has a lot of faux fur. Since this trend hasn’t been that mainstream, the chances are really high for this one to continue in 2017. Obviously, I’ll be wearing it like crazy.
4. The souvenir jacket.
Another boyfriend who came back, but this one you should keep it, he brought you a present. This trend is from World War II when the soldiers returned home and brought back jackets with Asian motives. It was a bomber jacket and it still is, but the designers use different fabrics to make their versions of it. Gucci is killing it with this trend. Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams love these jackets. They are probably staying, I mean, it’s a bomber jacket.
3. Tour merchandise everywhere.
Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Rihanna they all made their merchandise a trend, something stylish and fashionable. Experts say that these clothes are low quality and overpriced but people are buying it although they all look the same. Kanye made $1 million in a day with his pop-up show in NYC. Is it stopping? Well, Justin just announced an arena tour for 2017 so I don’t see any chance that his “believers” won’t buy his stuff. Definitely staying.
2. Combat Boots.
Suddenly, sneakers turned too mainstream. Those fashionable guys were looking for something more stylish but keeping a manly essence and they found it. Nothing will ever say man more than combat boots, the surprise arrives when you realize they actually look chic. They have this muddy kind of look that fits perfect with any outfit and it’s sexy as hell. My friend Mani (picture number one of combat boots) takes style very seriously. A few weeks ago he showed up at work wearing combat boots in order to get a Shia LaBeouf inspired outfit, he totally nailed it and now, just like Shia he won’t take those boots out. LaBeouf made his Nike boot a statement piece and he has them in many colors. According to the experts, this trend isn’t going anywhere since military are classics.
Yes, I wanted to include my friend in the post because he’s really cool. Give me a break!!
1. The Bomber Jacket.
This is a classic piece. It has been around forever, but this year every single fashion blogger wore one, making it go extremely viral. The Bomber Jacket is a piece everyone should own, it’s simple and depending on how you are using it you can get the most stylish look. They come in many fabrics and prints, the souvenir jacket is one of them. It is one of the most versatile pieces out there. If you want to look fancy, get a designer one, but if you just want to be comfortable you can wear one and you are ready to go. This year one of the biggest fast fashion brands came out with gorgeous models, Zara did it great, that’s fashionable and affordable at the same time, but if you look around, they are everywhere, I’m sure your college has one. So if you ask anyone if this is going anywhere the answer will be yes, it’s going everywhere, and is a timeless piece. Go get one now!.
