Even though we need each other, there’s plenty of differences between males and females, sometimes more than we like to admit. There has always been a particular rivalry us. As when we were little, the opposite gender was the enemy, mainly because they had ‘cooties.’
But as we grow up and set aside those childish games, we start fighting over new silly things. Being one of the most frequent ones: Who’s smarter boys or girls?
Does size matters?
Well, the guys from Asap Science made a video trying to solve this millenary question. A well-known fact is that boys brains are bigger because a boys body is usually bigger.
Even though it might seem this gives the heads up to the male side, means nothing. As the brains of certain animals like elephants, whales and dolphins are bigger than humans, but we all know that doesn’t mean they’re smarter.
The same in a different way.
Another huge difference between male and female brain is the way they’re wired and structured. A boy’s brains have more inner hemisphere connections while a girls brain have more connection between both hemispheres.
But even though many studies found that both male and female have a similar structure, the study also evaluated stereotypical behavior towards certain actions. Proving that there are no activities exclusively preferred by girls or boys. As only 0,1 of the study subjects prefer an only stereotypical behavior for both genders.
The test on intelligence.
The research shows that both men and women are equally smart (Never saw that one coming).
Although it revealed that girls have better verbal abilities and guys better visual space. As men varied more in their test performances being both the best and the worst results.
The environment is key.
Other studies found that girls do better in subjects like science, math, and language in 70% of nations. But also has stated that in SAT tests in the U.S. boys score 33 points higher than girls.
So what does all of this means? Well, it’s simple. It means that environmental and cultural facts and differences are the key factors. Instead of the biological differences that are generally thought.
Stereotype threat.
As other studies have shown, when a math test has gender differences women did worst. But when it didn’t both genders did equally well. This is called the “stereotype threat,” and it affects mainly girls, getting at them at such an early age as 6.
The wall.
These stereotypes are the reason why girls are having such a hard time in the world. As even college and job applications have a higher acceptance for boys than for girls. Even though they both had the same exams and results.
Slowly but surely these barriers are being put aside. As every year more women are getting recognition for their work and have been considered too important roles in our society. Contributing highly to science. Like Rosalind Franklin, Catherine Johnson and most recently Miriam Mirzakhani who is the first women to won a Nobel prize for maths.
