13 Reasons Why Second Season: Will These Cliffhangers Be Answered?

This Second Season Brings So Many Questions!

13 Reasons Second Season: Will These Cliffhangers Be Answered?

Netflix’s controversial series ‘13 Reasons Why’ will return in 2018 with a second season.

Selena Gomez, executive producer of the show, broke the news via her Instagram on Sunday, captioned “Their story isn’t over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.”

The adaption of the bestselling 2007 novel by Jay Asher, written by Brian Yorkey, follows a high school student, Hannah Baker, who commits suicide and leaves cassette tapes with 13 reasons of why she took her own life. The series has been renewed for a second season, set to premiere next year. The forthcoming 13 new hour-long episodes will “pick up in the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s death and the start of the characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery.”

For now, no more details about the second season have been revealed. A big question arises about the character of Hannah Baker, played by Katherine Langford, and if it will appear in the episodes.Yorkey previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the way the series is structured, and how the story is told in form of flashbacks with the present, would indicate that Langford’s character will be back.

“Hannah’s story is still very much not finished,” he said. “She’s an integral part of whatever the next chapter of the story is, and she’s very much still at the center of it.”

Season 1 left many loose ends that hopefully, season 2 will solve

Although the first season covered Asher’s book entirely, there are still stories to be told. Yorkey and the rest of the writers had to craft new storylines that hopefully will approach some of the questions left unanswered after the season finale.

What is Tyler planning to do with those guns?

The end of the first season was pretty obvious cliffhanger. Tyler, one of the teens you get to see getting bullied throughout the whole season, exposed as Hannah’s stalker, is shown purchasing a gun and opening a case with ammunition and more guns. Also, we get to see a series of photographs of other students. Is Tyler planning a school shooting as a revenge?

Did Alex actually commit suicide?

In the last episode, it was revealed that Alex, the only recipient of the tapes that felt remorse, had attempted suicide. At first, we only knew that a 17-year-old boy had been shot in the head, but the boy’s identity was revealed later. What we never got to know was if he survived or not, or what actually happened? Was it really a suicide? Or was he murdered?

How did things end up for Bryce?

When Clay had finished all 13 tapes, he added a fourteenth one, with Bryce’s confession for the rape of Hannah Baker. Then, he handed the tapes to Mr. Porter, the guidance counselor and the final recipient on Hannah’s list. What happened after he heard Bryce’s tape? Did he do anything about it, incriminate Bryce, or just let it go?

After criticism about how graphic the series is, will season 2 have to face some censorship?

Although the series had been critically acclaimed for its rawness, there have been lately some concerns about how it can affect young kids’ mental health. The show is very graphic and explicit on Hannah’s suicide along with her and Jessica’s rapes and has received many complaints about it. As a response, Netflix added more trigger warnings to the series.

“Currently the episodes that carry graphic content are identified as such and the series overall carries a TV-MA rating. Moving forward, we will add an additional viewer warning card before the first episode as an extra precaution for those about to start the series.”

However, Yorkey has no intentions on cool it down with the graphic content. “It should be difficult to watch. If we make it easy, then we’re selling goods that we didn’t want to sell,” the screenwriter said.
